Born in Germany in 1960 Speck holds a doctorate in political science from the University of Freiburg im Breisgau (1995). From 1989 to 1993 he was a researcher at the Arnold Bergstraesser Institut (ABI) in Freiburg. In 1993 he joined the São Paulo based think tank IDESP (Instituto de Estudos Econômicos, Sociais e Políticos de São Paulo) and in 1995 he started lecturing political science at Unicamp (State University of Campinas, Brazil). He has been a fellow researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg (1999) and a visiting professor at the Freie Universität Berlin (2002). From 2003 to 2009 Speck joined Transparency International (a network of nonprofit organizations fighting corruption worldwide, based in Berlin) as a senior researcher. In 2010 Speck went back to teaching and research at Unicamp, where he acted as Head of Department of Political Science. In 2013 he was a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston, USA) and in 2014 he joined the Department of Political Science of USP (State University of São Paulo, Brazil). Professional expertise includes consultancy for INWENT and GTZ (both German aid agencies), the Carter Center and IFES (both US based nonprofits), the Christian Michelsen Institute (a research institute focusing on anti-corruption policies, based in Norway) and the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Paris). Speck has published books and articles on good governance, corruption, parties and party systems, money in politics, campaign finance and government auditing. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
