Alvaro Penteado Crósta

ALVARO PENTEADO CRÓSTA is a Senior Geology Professor (retired) at the Institute of Geosciences, University of Campinas, Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, of the Sciences Academy of São Paulo, and holds a Research Productivity Grant from the Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). He was Vice-Rector (Deputy Vice-Chancellor) of the University of Campinas (Unicamp) between 2013-2017. Elected Council Member of the Meteoritical Society (2023-2025). Member of the Nominating Committe of the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG - 2023-2024). Council Member of the Institute for Advanced Studies Unicamp.His areas of expertise are geological remote sensing, mineral exploration and planetary geology. His education background includes a BSc in Geology from the University of São Paulo (USP), MSc in Remote Sensing from the Brazilian National Space Research Institute (INPE) and PhD from Imperial College (UK). He was a visiting scientist at the Desert Research Institute, University of Nevada (Reno, USA), the Museum für Naturkunde, Humboldt-Universität (Berlin, Germany), the Universität Wein (Vienna, Austria) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA/CalTech) in Pasadena, CA, USA. At the Institute of Geosciences UNICAMP he was Head of Department, Post Graduate Coordinator and Director. At UNICAMPs Rectors Office he was Chief of Staff (2000 to 2001) and Pro-Rector of University Development (2001 to 2002). He has served as elected faculty member of the University Council for several terms. At UNICAMP Development Foundation (Funcamp) he was currently the President of the Board of Trustees and was Finance Director (2010 to 2012), member of Fiscal Council (2006 to 2009) and served several terms as member of the Board of Trustees. Deputy Coordinator (2008 to 2010) and Coordinator (2011 to 2013) of the Geosciences Committee at CAPES/Ministry of Education.Member of the Executive Committee of the IODP Brazil Program (International Ocean Discovery Program). 2015-2019.Fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists and, in 2010 received the Regional Vice President Lecturer Award from the Society. He also served as a member of the Distinguished Lecturer Committee (2011-2013) and as Regional Vice-President for South America for SEG. He was a member of the Barringer Medal and Award Selection Committee of the Meteoritical Society (2012-2016).He was a member of the JOIDES Resolution Facility Board, of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), representing CAPES/Brazil (2016-2017).Associate Editor of Economic Geology (SEG) and Brazilian Journal of Geology; acted as AE of the Geological Society of America Bulletin (2010-2016).
