Dimas Dias Brito

DIMAS DIAS-BRITO. Senior geologist, acting as a volunteer professor at Universidade Estadual Paulista. Currently, he is a member of the research group of UNESPetro - Center for Petroleum Geosciences - that develop R D projects under the partnership UNESP-Petrobras. Between 1989 and 2018, Dimas Dias Brito was a professor of the Department of Applied Geology at the Institute of Geosciences and Exact Sciences - of the São Paulo State University - UNESP, in Rio Claro, teaching undergraduate and graduate students of the Geology courses (Sedimentary Petrology, Micropaleontology, Scientific Communication), Biology and Ecology (Geology/Paleoecology). In recent years he has led a cooperation program between UNESP and Petrobras, including R D and education projects focused mainly on carbonate rocks. He has published the following work in co-authorship with Brazilian and foreign geoscientists: a. Sensibilidade do Litoral Paulista a derramamentos de petróleo (2014); b. Calcários do Cretáceo do Brasil: um Atlas (2015); c. Microbialitos do Brasil, do Pré-Cambriano ao Recente: um Atlas (2015); d. Petrologia Sedimentar Carbonática: iniciação com base no registro geológico do Brasil (2017); e. Guia Petrográfico dos Carbonatos do Brasil (2017). Between 1976 and 1989 he worked as a geologist in Petrobras. He served as a subsurface geologist in the Amazon/Foz do Amazonas; was part of the team of the Central Exploration Laboratory and the Petrobras Research Center - CENPES, in Rio de Janeiro, where for more than 5 years he headed the team of Bioestratigraphy and Paleoecology. Dimas Dias Brito graduated in Geology from the University of Brasília - UnB; 1976. He obtained a Master's degree in Geosciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro UFRJ, 1988; in 2000 he received a PhD in Geosciences from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS. He specialized in carbonate microbiofacies under Prof. P.Bronnimann at the Department des Sciences de la Terre in Geneva (1980), and completed his specialization in Scientific Journalism at UNICAMP (2000). Author of dozen articles and book chapters published in Brazil and abroad, he investigated paleoceanography of the primitive South Atlantic from carbonate rocks studies, micropaleontology of Brazilian continental Cretaceous, ecology of foraminifera and geobotany of modern environments of the Brazilian coast (mangroves and lagoons), and developed research on coastal sensitivity to oil spills. He has led numerous research projects and guided undergraduate and graduate students from Brazil and abroad. He is a member of editorial committees of national and foreign scientific journals, having played a leading role in the creation of the Petrobras Geoscience Bulletin. Set up and coordinated geoscientific events (I and II Symposium on the Evolution of the South Atlantic and some editions of the Symposium on the Cretaceous of Brazil, having acted as editor of some of its volumes). Dimas Dias Brito set up and led, for several years, the Human Resources Training Program in Geology and Environmental Sciences Applied to the Oil Gas Sector, PRH 05, linked to the National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels - ANP. At UNESP, Rio Claro (20102018), he designed, structured and coordinated a Center for Geosciences applied to Petroleum - the UNESPetro, a complex of laboratories focused on research and teaching.
