Dr. Luis Gustavo Goncalves de Goncalves is involved in research with surface hydrology, land surface-atmosphere interactions, hydrometeorology and land surface modeling with special interest in South America. Since 2005 he has been working in collaboration with U.S. Universities and Research Institutes and South American partners, including the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE from its acronym in Portuguese) in the South American Land Data Assimilation System (SALDAS). He joined the Hydrological Sciences Branch at NASA/GSFC in Greenbelt, MD, on 2005 as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow after concluding his Ph.D. in Hydrology from the Hydrology and Water Resources Department at the University of Arizona. He is currently affiliated with the Earth System Sciences Interdisciplinary Center at the University of Maryland College Park and among other activities, participates as organizer and main contact person for the LBA Model Intercomparison Project (LBA-MIP): (see http://www.climatemodeling.org/lba-mip) in an ad-hoc group at NASA/GSFC to promote capacity building activities in water management and surface-atmosphere interactions in the Latin America. He currently participates in projects with UMD, NOAA, UofA and INPE. Dr. de Goncalves undergraduate was in Meteorology from Universidade Federal de Pelotas and M.Sc. in data assimilation in Meteorology from INPE. His professional experience includes monitoring, development and evaluation of operational atmospheric models at the Center for Weather Forecast and Climate Studies, a division of INPE.
