She holds a degree in Biological Sciences from the State University of Campinas (2001), a master's degree in Remote Sensing from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE, 2004), with training at the University of Maryland (USA, 2003), a PhD from the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford (England, 2006-2011) and a postdoctoral degree from the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford (2011-2014). She was a researcher at the National Centre for Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alerts (CEMADEN) between 2014 and 2025. In 2025, she began working as a researcher at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), where she also teaches on the postgraduate course in Remote Sensing. She co-leads the TREES lab (TRopical Ecosystems and Environmental Sciences lab), where she conducts research with young researchers from undergraduate to postdoctoral levels on the topics of risk management and impacts associated with forest fires and the impacts of extreme weather on Amazonian ecosystems and populations.Since March 2017, Liana has held a CNPq Productivity Grant.
