Bachelor's in Law (University of São Paulo, 2013), Master in Human Rights (University of São Paulo, 2016), double degree PhD student (University of São Paulo/ University of Montreal, 2017-2020). Main research in gender studies, with emphasis on depatologization of transidentities and legal recognition of their demands. My current doctoral research continues and deepens the analysis made during my master's degree on the states legal policies regarding the right to rectify the sex mention of people whose gender identity don't fit with the gender assigned at birth. The recent increase of states that have regulate this right without conditioning people to go through unwanted medical procedures and/or follow-up seems to indicate a greater acceptance of a trans-affirmative approach in substitution of the medical one, but also compels us to reflect on the limits of the formal legal changes on the living conditions of minorities. The origin of the current PhD.D research is, therefore, the need to counter this apparent progress in the formal field of civil rights with the continuing alarming rates of discrimination, violence, and deprivation of civil and social rights to which gender identity minorities are especially vulnerable. By countering the prevailing social (and legal) gendered norms, these people almost always are affected with reduced life chances and fundamental rights, ranging from the right to life and physical integrity to the right to health, education, work and to the full realization of their life project. Thus, the present doctoral research is inserted in this context of the rapid and significant legal and institutional changes, being interested now in a North-South comparison that considers not only legal differences but also cultural, political and socioeconomic aspects. The option of comparing the Quebec and Brazilian legal order is justified, among other reasons, by the fact that Quebec is the largest civil law north American jurisdiction which, like Brazil, has full autonomy to legislate about name and sex mention rectification. At the same time, Quebec?s social, economic, cultural and political reality is extremely different from Brazilian ones. It is, therefore, the two largest American jurisdictions, one in the developed North and one in the underdeveloped South, where gender identification on a self-affirming and non-pathological basis has recently been legal achieved (2015 and 2018, respectively).
