Professor of Epidemiology at the Institute of Collective Health of the Federal University of Bahia. Senior Researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development CNPq. Physician, Master in Community Health, Ph.D. in Epidemiology. Doctor of Science Honoris Causa: McGill University, Canada. Visiting Professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of São Paulo (USP), where he held the Alfredo Bosi Chair in Education from 2020 to 2023, developing studies on the relationship between university, education, history and society. He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of California at Berkeley, University of Montreal and Harvard University. First Holder of the Juan Cesar Garcia Chair at the Universidad de Guadalajara, Mexico; Visiting Professor of Mastery in Epidemiology at the Universidad Nacional de Lanús, Argentina. Researcher in the field of epidemiology of mental disorders, particularly the effect of race, racism, gender, and social class on mental health. CNPq level I-A between 1986 and 2022. His scientific production totals 395 published works, including 223 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals (67 in foreign journals) and 118 chapters in specialized collections (27 abroad), in addition to 27 technical books (8 abroad). He has received 29 national and international laurels and commendations. In his academic production, a series of textbooks on the epidemiological method stand out: Epidemiology Health (with Zélia Rouquayrol, Rio: Guanabara-Koogan, 6th ed. 2003); Introduction to epidemiology (with Zélia Rouquayrol, Rio: Guanabara-Koogan, 4th ed. 2006); Epidemiology Health: Fundamentals, Methods, Applications (with Maurício Barreto, Rio: Guanabara-Koogan, 2011); and on epistemological aspects of Epidemiology and the field of Public Health: Epidemiology without numbers (Rio: Campus, 1989; Spanish translation, Buenos Aires: Paltex/PAHO, 1992); The Clinic and Epidemiology (Rio: Abrasco/ APCE, 2nd ed. 1997); The Science of Health (São Paulo: Hucitec, 2000); La ciencia tímida: ensayos hacia la deconstrucción de la epidemiología (Buenos Aires: Editorial Lugar, 2000); What is Health? He served as President of the Federal University of Bahia (2002-2010) and of the Federal University of Southern Bahia (2013-2017).
