Prior to his academic career, he worked as a structural engineer, designing buildings in reinforced concrete and structural masonry. He is currently a Full Professor at UFSCar. He coordinates a group and laboratory dedicated to the research and learning of concrete and structural masonry, having supervised more than 150 undergraduate, specialization, master's and doctoral students. At UFSCar he was Coordinator of the Undergraduate Program in Civil Engineering (2009-11), the Graduate Program in Civil Engineering (2015-2021) and the Specialization in Building Management and Technology (2002-current), and is currently Coordinator of the Internationalization Program in the thematic area of Strategic Materials. In 2012 he organized and co-chaired the 15th International Brick and Block Masonry Conference. In 2016, he received the Personality of the Year award from the National Association of the Ceramic Industry, an award offered again to UFSCar in 2019. In 2021, he received the Lobo Carneiro Outstanding Award in Research Engineering in Concrete Structure from the Brazilian Institute of Concrete. In 2023, he received the "Gilberto Molinari" Outstanding Award in Recognition of the relevant services provided to IBRACON. Author of several books, including the Brazilian edition of the book Behavior and Design of Structural Masonry, Design Parameters of Structural Masonry with Concrete Blocks, Structural Masonry in Ceramic Blocks. He is one of the editors of the IBRACON/ABECE Collection Reinforced Concrete Structures, with two published volumes. He has been a Guest Speaker in Portugal (IMC, 2014), Uruguay (Seminário Ceramica Armada - Universidad de la Republica, 2017), Ecuador (Swisscontact, 2014), USA (NAMC, 2015), Canada (CMC, 2017) and in several Brazilian events and institutions (ENIC, Concrete Show, Minascon, ANICER Meeting, ABCP, ABBECE, IE, USP, UNESP, UNICAMP and others). He has been a member of the Technical and National Committee of SINAT for several years. Within the WG in TECHNOLOGY OF SYSTEMS AND CONSTRUCTION PROCESSES of ANTAC, he was one of the creators of the WORKSHOP ON TECHNOLOGY OF PROCESSES AND CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS. He is a member of the Regional Board of ABECE, being the creator and organizer of the ABECE-UFSCar Meeting on Structural Engineering (which later became the ABECE-Universities Symposium) and a member of the Editorial Board of the Revista Estrutura. He was Director of Publications at IBRACON, Editor-in-Chief of IBRACON Structures and Materials Journal, President of the Editorial Committee of Concrete and Constructions Journal. He is Coordinator of the ABNT Standard Committee in Structural Masonry, and one of the main articulators of the unification of standards on the subject, published in 2020. Member of the American standard committee TMS 402/602 Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures. He has also published other chapters and several articles in journals and conferences. Research of interest includes: Experimental Behavior and Numerical Modeling of Concrete and Masonry Structures, Applications of Structural Materials, Rationalization of Constructions, and Analysis and Repair of Contemporary and Historic Constructions.
