I graduated in medicine at Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM) (1976), did two years of medical residency in Pediatrics (77-78) and one year in Preventive Medicine (79) at EPM. I started my career as a sanitary doctor at the State Health Secretariat in 1980. In 1982, I obtained my MSc in Community Medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSH & TM). In 1984, I started a teaching career in the Epidemiology Discipline of the Department of Preventive Medicine at EPM. In 1987, I obtained a PhD degree from the University of London, with the first population study with elderly people in Brazil. In 1989, I moved to the EPM Department of Medicine and started to form the Geriatrics Discipline, which was made official in 1994. Since 1991, I run the Center for Aging Studies and coordinate the first Brazilian cohort study with elderly residents in community (Projeto Epidoso) that are maintained today, with funding from Cnpq and Fapesp. In 1996, with the support of Fapesp, I did a post-doctorate at Harvard University, in the area of neuropsychogeriatrics. In 1997, I obtained the title of Professor of Geriatrics at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). I was the head of the Discipline of Geriatrics from 1997 to 2002. In 2004, I got a vacancy through a Full Professor contest at the Department of Preventive Medicine at UNIFESP. I was head of the Department from 2005 to 11. I coordinated the master's and doctoral course in Collective Health from UNIFESP from 2006 to 2010 and belonged to the advisory committee in the area of Collective Health at CAPES in the 2004-06 period. I currently coordinate the CAPES-PRINT-UNIFESP Longevity theme. I have 59 master's degrees, 24 doctoral degrees completed and 4 postdoctoral fellows so far. I have 165 publications in indexed journals, two books and 19 book chapters. My lines of research: epidemiology of aging (CNPQ Research Group), health promotion, cognition in the elderly, physical activity in the elderly. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
