Birthplace: Sérvia

Ljubica Tasic is a chemist, holds a PhD (2002), and leads a biological chemistry group at the Organic Chemistry Department of the Institute of Chemistry, University of Campinas, Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2004). She is a full professor (2024). Her research projects are related to biochemistry, bionanotechnology, and metabolomics. She studies the chemistry and biochemistry of diseases using bioanalytical, biophysics, and biochemistry techniques. She seeks information about the composition of mixtures or structures of different biomolecules to understand how biological systems change. She aims to understand the molecular bases of various diseases, emphasizing human health problems. Our research interests in metabolomics are divided into three main fields: (i) the use of advanced analytical tools such as NMR-based metabolomics in the investigation of clinical and animal model samples; (ii) studying the mechanisms of the alterations provoked because of the disease and some drug use trough effects on metabolites, and (iii) human biomonitoring studies. Ljubica's research team has been evaluating various human diseases, such as mental health disorders, illicit drug use (crack), cancer in children and adults, and others using semi-solid and liquid NMR techniques. In bionanotechnology, she explores the wide use of metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles, such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and uses biogenic routes for their synthesis. Our research group also produces new materials and compounds with biological activities from agro-industrial waste. We can also mention projects under development with the Brazilian industry, one in the pilot scale phase, Orange Biorefinery, which aimed to use orange pomace to produce materials such as hesperitin, pectin, lignin, and cellulose nanofibers, in a sequential extraction process idealized, designed and developed by our group. She has authored or co-authored over 135 peer-reviewed publications in journals of chemistry, nanotechnology, and bionanotechnology, with around 3,700 citations, (h 32). Also, she has organized one book, published over 25 book chapters, and deposited 9 patents (Brazilian Agency), two (2) conceived recently. For around 20 years as a professor at UNICAMP, she has mentored and supervised, providing advice, training, and career development opportunities to PhD students (12), MSc degree students (17), post-docs (15), and under-graduation research projects (more than 65).
