The Dense Energy Carrier Division will consolidate expertise in materials processing, advanced characterization and physics of semiconductors devices of LNNano/CNPEM with that of Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC) and Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar) in electrochemistry and photoelectrochemestry to develop state-of-the-art research…
Based on our previous experience, we propose a step forward in materials science research with the formation of a multidisciplinary Center for the Development of Functional Materials (CDFM). This center will be an offshoot of the Multidisciplinary Center for the Development of Ceramic Materials (MCDCM) which received FAPESP support from the first version of the CEPID program. The core foc…

In view of the serious environmental consequences caused by the continuous increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, technologies for its conversion into value-added chemicals are a high priority field of study. In this context, the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (ERCO2) is considered a promising path because it allows the production of high demand chemical inputs. However, d…
Water is an essential resource for life and is considered a human right bu the UN. Despite the enormous amount of water presente on the planet, lesse than 3\% of this total is suitable for the consumption of human beings and animals. Furthermore, this water is unevenly distributed around the globe. Such factors, together with the exponential increase in population, lead to water scarcity …
Excess of CO2, which is associated with the greenhouse effect, was mainly caused by industrialization and has become a serious environmental problem. In addition, CO2 is a highly stable molecule and is the end product of burning organic compounds. In this sense, methods are required to transform this waste into non-toxic and, when possible, high added value products. Considering these asp…

The development process of any electrochemical device comprises both experimental and modeling steps. It is necessary that both advance concomitantly so that the optimization of the device is achieved. It is in this context that this work proposal takes its place. The knowledge about simulation and modeling built in recent years would be of great benefit to contribute to the improvement o…
Redox Flow Batteries (RFBs) are promising electrochemical devices for energy storage generated by renewable sources, which are remarkably intermittent. Among the advantages of RFBs in this application is the low cost of production, flexibility, mobility, fast response, simple design and safety advantages over commercial lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries. Since the 1970s, several efforts…
We propose to study electron transfer through extended porphyrins trapped in the tunnelling gap between a metal substrate and a metal tip with in situ Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy (STS). The porphyrins will be synthesized with increasing complexity as the project advances. In parallel, the electrocatalytic activity of the prophyrins towards the oxygen reduction reaction will be analyse…

Ionic diodes have been studied in electrochemistry, as one of the solutions to produce potable water by desalination, energy production and recovery of neutral molecules. This last item is of great interest in drug transport, removing it from one compartment and accumulating it in another. However, the conditions for this process still need to be optimized. Experimental studies have been …
Porphyrinoids consist in a class of materials closely related to nature. Without porphyrins, life as we know would not exist, since they are responsible for conversion of sunlight into chemical energy, in chloroplasts, transport and reduction of oxygen in hemoglobins and electron transport and catalysis in citochromes. In analogy to nature and due to its exceptional optical and electronic…
