Dr Irina holds a degree in Biology and Chemistry from the Federal University of Tomsk (1978), a master's degree in Biology and Chemistry from the Federal University of Tomsk (1981), and a Ph.D. in Cytogenetics from the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (1989). Recognition by the University of São Paulo for the Doctor in Sciences - Biology (Genetics) title in 2004. She obtained a Licentiate in Biological Sciences from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994. She is currently the director of the Genetics Laboratory at the Butantan Institute and a Level VI researcher at the Butantan Institute. She has extensive experience, leadership, and training in Biology. Her current focus is translational medicine using immature stem cells from human dental pulp in neurodegenerative and hematopoietic diseases. It has filed over fifty patents (20 of which have already been assigned) in the large-scale production of dental pulp stem cells and their use for treating neurodegenerative diseases. The technology was licensed by the Brazilian company Cellavita Pesquisas Cientificas Ltd, which carried out two clinical studies regulated by ANVISA, which showed the safety and effectiveness of the treatment for patients with Huntington's disease (HD). Another phase 1/2 clinical study was developed with COVID-19 patients. Currently, the company, in partnership with Instituto Butantan, is moving to carry out the phase III study in HD and to register the product. She has published more than 120 scientific articles and 20 book chapters. She has also served as a keynote speaker at national and international scientific events and has received numerous awards.
