Carlos Jared has a degree in Biological Sciences, a PhD in Biology (Comparative Morphology) from the Paulista School of Medicine of the Federal University of São Paulo (EPM-UNIFESP), a PhD in History of Science from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and a post-doctorate in Integrative Biology by the Department of Zoology of the Biosciences Institute of the University of São Paulo. He is currently a Senior Scientific Researcher and Director of the Structural and Functional Biology Laboratory at the Butantan Institute. He is a Professor in the Postgraduate Program in Toxinology at the Butantan Institute and in the Postgraduate Program in the Department of Zoology at the Institute of Biosciences at the University of São Paulo. He works in the area of #8203;#8203;Comparative Morphology, correlated to the Biology and Natural History of amphibians (mainly anurans and caecilians) and reptiles. His research focuses mainly on the study of poison and venom glands, which act in chemical defence, both active (like that of reptiles) and passive (like that of amphibians). He also studies the biology of lizards and amphisbaenians, emphasizing the morphology of the pheromonal glands responsible for intra- and interspecific chemical communication. He also develops a line of research related to South American marsupials' biology and natural history, focusing on their ophiophagous behaviour and natural resistance to snake venoms. In the area of #8203;#8203;the History of Science, his interest is focused on the History of Medicine in Brazil, seeking to improve knowledge of what led to the creation of the Brazilian scientific research institutes between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.
