uemia-reperfusão, com o Bachelor in Medicine at the Universidade de São Paulo (1963) and Docteur ès Sciences at the Université Paris-Sud 11 (1972). Full professor at the Institut Pasteur (Paris) from 1977 to 2002 and full professor of Pharmacology at the Biomedical Sciences Institute of the University of São Paulo until 2007. Member of the Board of Directors of the Institut Pasteur from 1997 to 2000, responsible for development of in-house discoveries. Has experience in broncopulmonary inflammation, allergy, thrombosis (platelets) and inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins and in snake venoms. Claims the discovery the mode of action of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents as inhibitors of prostanoid symthesis and characterised the role and pulmonary and platelet effects of Platelet-activating Factor (PAF). Discovered the properties of EFD (Extended-Freeze Dried derivative from BCG), thus providing a novel mechanisms of anti-allergy and anti-inflammation. Has been granted by the Grand Prix Electricité-Santé from "Eléctricité de France" em 1993. Started and managed the Institut Pasteur Euroconferences and later the São Paulo Research Conferences (11 full conferences). Founder and for many years President of the GREMI (Groupe de Recherche sur les Médiateurs de l'Inflammation), french inflammation club and member of the Board of the International Association of Inflammation Societies, for which organized the last Congress (2013) in Natal, Brazil. Presently (2015), investigates, in association with Prof. Wothan Tavares de Lima (ICB-USP), the mechanisms of lung lesions following intestinal ischaemia-reperfusion.
