He was born in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, the son of Francisco Messias and Ernesta Rota Messias. He is married to Iracimara and has two daughters, Sofia and Gabriela. He holds a bachelors degree in Mathematics from FCT/UNESP Presidente Prudente Campus (1989), a masters degree in Applied Mathematics from the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of São Paulo - IME-USP (1993), a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics also from IME-USP (2000), and a professorship in Mathematics, in the area of Ordinary Differential Equations, from FCT/UNESP (2009). Associate Professor III in the Department of Mathematics and Computing at FCT/UNESP, where he served as department chair from 2002 to 2004. He was Deputy Director of FCT/UNESP from March 2010 to February 2014, and Director from March 2014 to March 2018. He conducts research in Qualitative Theory and Bifurcations of Ordinary Differential Equations (or Dynamical Systems), with a particular interest in the study of polynomial differential systems, the chaotic behavior of solutions, and applications in the study of physical and biological phenomena and in memristive electrical circuits. In addition to the theoretical study and applications of ODEs, he works with computational simulations using MAPLE software. Professor and advisor in the Graduate Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics at FCT/UNESP (posMAC), in the Applied Mathematics research area. Academic Editor of the journal Complexity, published by John Wiley Sons, as well as a reviewer for several journals in the field of ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems.
