Tears and myths: translations and appropriations of the French melodrama in Brazil (1830-1910)

This thesis presents a study about French melodrama in Brazil during the 19th century, which aimed to describe the processes of introduction, circulation and permanence of the genre in Brazilian stages. The first chapter reconstructs the repertoire represented and verifies that not only the famous artist João Caetano dos Santos (1808-1863) performed the plays, but also other main actors and theater entrepreneurs such as Germano Francisco de Oliveira (1820-1885), Florindo Joaquim da Silva (1814-1893) and Joaquim Augusto Ribeiro de Souza (1825-1873). The following chapter analyzes some translations into Portuguese, represented in the Brazilian theaters, and reveals that the process of translation and scenic realization of the melodrama led to modifications in the original texts. The material conditions of the companies and the political, religious and moral principles that guided the censorship of the Brazilian Dramatic Conservatory, accommodated the pieces. The third chapter studies the circulation of the melodrama and demonstrates that the mobility of actors-entrepreneurs contributed to the diffusion of the genre in the Empire provinces¿ theaters. The last chapter discusses the way in which the melodrama permanence occurred and verifies that the competitive relations established among the artists determined the survival of the genre in the Brazilian theater. This thesis concludes that, throughout the 19th century, the specific phenomena of the reception of melodrama in Brazil explain the appropriation and permanence dynamics of the genre in our stages (AU)
