Abstract

Seeking to understand the role of the interface Cu-support in the dehydrogenative coupling between ethanol and acetaldehyde, mesoporous silica was used as a model support to allow creating Cu nanoparticles interfacing with metal oxides, such as Al2O3, Cr2O3, ZnO and ZrO2. The reaction rate for ethyl acetate formation increased as: 10Cu/MCM-41 < 5Cr(2)O(3)-10Cu/MCM-41 < 5Al(2)O(3)-10Cu/MCM-41 < 5ZrO(2)-10Cu/MCM-41 = 5ZnO-10Cu/MCM-41. It was also found a correlation between the TOF for acetaldehyde or ethyl acetate formation and the ethanol enthalpy of adsorption in the metal oxide. This brings an evidence that the extension of the ethanol dehydrogenation is dependent on the activation of ethanol by the metal oxide and that the dehydrogenative coupling takes place in the interface Cu-(metal oxide).
