Abstract

Seven new species ofUrocleidoidesfrom the gills and skin of nine Neotropical fish hosts (Anostomidae, Parodontidae, and Gymnotidae) are described:Urocleidoides digitabulumn. sp. onLeporinus friderici,Leporinus octofasciatus, andMegaleporinus elongatus(Anostomidae);Urocleidoides solarivaginatusn. sp. onL. friderici,L. octofasciatus, andLeporinus striatus(Anostomidae);Urocleidoides falxusn. sp. andUrocleidoides sapucaiensisn. sp. onM. elongatus;Urocleidoides tenuisn. sp. onApareiodon piracicabaeandApareiodon affinis(Parodontidae);Urocleidoides sinusn. sp. onL. striatus,Schizodon nasutus, andSchizodon intermedius(Anostomidae); andUrocleidoides uncinusn. sp. onGymnotus sylvius(Gymnotidae).Urocleidoides paradoxuswas also found in this study onL. fridericiand included in the phylogenetic analysis. Molecular data (partial 28S rDNA and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I) were obtained forU. digitabulumn. sp.,U. tenuisn. sp.,U. sinusn. sp., andU. uncinusn. sp. The identification ofUrocleidoidesis amended herein to include all taxonomic modifications observed in this genus over time and add new characteristics observed in the species in the present study. Phylogenetic analysis revealedUrocleidoides digitabulumn. sp. andUrocleidoides sinusn. sp. (parasites of anostomids) closely related in the tree topologies. Furthermore, the new species described herein parasitized phylogenetically distant host species (Characiformes and Gymnotiformes), suggesting the effect of the dynamic process of ecological fitting.
