Abstract

This work is a study on the baptismal manumissions recorded between 1774 and 1871 in the ecclesiastical books of two different parishes (Nossa Senhora da Conceição e Santa Cruz) from the county of Campinas, São Paulo, and on their historical agents. One of the objectives of this research is to verify the dynamics of the manumissions over time, bringing into light their patterns and movements, and to investigate the profile of freed slaves and other individuals involved in such a process. Furthermore, through case studies and reconstruction of life experiences and strategies of enslaved women and men, this investigation also intends to apprehend to which extent the social interactions established and held by them with other subjects of the Brazilian slave society played a role in their newborn children’s conquering of freedom through baptism. To accomplish these goals, we have resorted to a diverse set of documentary sources, such as ecclesiastical, census, and notarial records, and to the "nominative record linkage" method. In this manner, we seek to shed light on new aspects of the relations established between enslaved people and other individuals, as well as on the meanings attributed to the manumission process by them, and to contribute to the main debates over slavery and freedom in Brazil (AU)
