Abstract

The thesis aims to understand how media literacy, inserted in the education of young people, can contribute to the exercise of citizenship. It starts from the idea that it is not enough just access to media and information, but that there is also a need to learn how to understand and select media; filter and interpret the contents; knowing how to appropriate the media to seek information and knowledge; produce their own content and be able to dialogue and effectively participate in society. To achieve this goal, a survey and study of works related to citizenship, education, participation, youth and connections, technology and education, fake news and disinformation and media literacy was initially carried out. Media literacy workshops were also developed and carried out in public schools in Portugal and Brazil (classes with an average age range of 12 to 13 years old), in order to verify how media literacy can contribute to the formation and citizen participation of these young people.
