Resumo

The field of astronomical instrumentation is advancing very fast and modern instruments are more and more specialised. High specialisation also comes with an increased complexity in their design, operation and, in many cases, scientific exploitation.Perhaps, the most noticeable breakthrough is the next generation of telescopes which is currently being built. Differently from their predecessors, the three big projects under construction have segmented mirrors and make large use of adaptive optics, thus starting a new era in ground-based astronomy.This school is aimed at students and young post-docs with interest in astronomical instrumentation. The topics of the lectures have been selected to be relevant for the design and development of the instruments of the new telescopes with diameters larger than 20m. (AU)
