Resumo

Em recente investigação filogética utilizando-se análise molecular nas espécies do Atlântico oeste, constatou-se uma considerável confusão sobre a taxonomia das espécies do gênero Portunus. Assim, considerando-se a presença de espécies análogas para este gênero no lado Pacifico da America e nenhuma informação recente sobre as relações filogenéticas entre espécies de ambos os lados deste continente, decidiu-se endereçar este projeto para: 1) realizar um amplo estudo das relações filogenéticas entre o gênero Portunus do Pacífico oeste e Atlântico leste, por meio de análise molecular (16S ribossomal) e morfológica; 2) elucidar as relações evolutivas deste grupo na família Portuninae que nunca foram estudadas filogeneticamente; 3) revisar a sistemática e a biogeografia deste gênero no continente americano, propondo uma atualização na classificação dos Portuninae, contribuindo ao entendimento de sua evolução. Pretende-se estabelecer e consolidar um novo núcleo de pesquisa em sistemática morfológica e molecular no Brasil. (AU)
