Resumo

O projeto de construção e operação do Observatório Pierre Auger é uma obra desenvolvida em colaboração internacional, envolvendo pesquisadores de instituições em dezessete países. O Observatório Auger tem como objetivo principal o estudo de raios cósmicos na faixa de energias em torno e acima de 1018 eV. Presentemente, esses raios cósmicos são as partículas de mais alta energia já observadas na natureza. Os dados experimentais obtidos no Observatório permitem dar passos importantes no entendimento de origem, processos de aceleração, propagação desde as fontes até a Terra, composição e espectro energético desses raios cósmicos de energias ultra altas. Em seu projeto original, o Observatório está concebido como constituído de dois sítios, um em cada hemisfério terrestre, visando a cobertura total do céu. O sítio sul do Observatório está localizado próximo à cidade de Malargüe, na Argentina, e teve sua construção concluída em junho de 2008. Este projeto temático vem suceder ao anterior, já apoiado pela FAPESP (1999/05404-3), e tem como objetivos viabilizar a continuidade da participação de pesquisadores paulistas na Colaboração Auger, contribuir com a parcela correspondente aos pesquisadores paulistas para a operação e a manutenção do Observatório nos próximos quatro anos, viabilizar a reposição de equipamento, e também possibilitar a participação dos pesquisadores nos turnos de operação dos detectores e Reuniões de Trabalho. Igualmente, possibilitará a participação nos esforços de P&D para o Research and Development Array (RDA) para o sítio norte do Observatório Auger, localizado próximo à cidade de Lamar, CO, EUA. (AU)
