Resumo

This project will be developed in the scenario of the thematic project coordinated by Dr. Opher, "Formation and Evolution of Structures in the Universe". The main goal of this project is to contribute to a better characterization of the properties of galaxies in environments as peculiar as those of compact groups, and contribute to a better understanding of the differences of galaxy properties as a function of the environment. The specific objective of this work will be to analyze galaxies in compact groups identified from semi analytical models of galaxy formation combined with numerical simulations, and then compare them to observational results. In particular we will (1) study the properties of galaxies in compact groups identified as real physical systems in the millennium simulations, (2) study the evolution of compact groups, and develop an algorithm to identify these groups in observational samples at high redshifts and (3) construct the largest and most homogeneous sample of compact groups with 4 or more accordant velocities by applying an optimized automatic searching algorithm on large observational samples. In particular we want to select groups from the 2MASS survey to study their internal kinematics, metallicities, densities and AGN fraction, possibly also with observations done with the BTFI (if it is operational). Finally, we plan to prepare a group finding algorithm for study of large surveys such as the ones which will be obtained with JPAS (Javalambre Physics of the Accelerating Universe) survey, of 40 narrow-band filters, over the whole northern sky.
