Resumo

O sistema nervoso central (SNC) é constituído por astrócitos (50%), oligodendrócitos (40%), micróglia (5%) e células ependimárias (5%), os quais oferecem o suporte estrutural e funcional para os neurônios. Em especial os tumores da glia (glioma ou glioblastoma) estão entre as neoplasias mais comuns do SNC adulto e surgem a partir de astrócitos, oligodendrócitos e seus precursores. O glioblastoma multiformé (GBM) é o tipo mais agressivo e freqüente desses tumores. Outro problema grave que acomete o SNC é o chamado acidente vascular cerebral (AVC), o qual é causado pela redução do suprimento sanguíneo, resultando no decréscimo da oferta de oxigênio e glicose em uma área do cérebro. Um terceiro problema grave é a presença de sangue no espaço subaracnoideo devido à hemorragia meníngea, o que leva ao vasoespasmo das artérias cerebrais. Todos os tratamentos existentes atualmente para os acometimentos cerebraisaqui relatados são pouco eficazes, resultando em um grande número de pacientes com seqüelas neurológicas graves ou mortes. Por isso, existe a necessidade de desenvolver uma abordagem terapêutica mais efetiva. Este projeto está basicamente dividido em cinco subprojetos, sendo três relacionados ao glioblastoma, um relacionado ao vasoespasmo cerebral e outro referente à isquemia cerebral focal. Os estudos propostos neste projeto nos parecem de extrema relevância, visto que a utilização de novas tecnologias, em um tema já explorado, mas, com pouco sucesso, parece ser a chave para a descoberta de novas estratégias terapêuticas. Logo, a linha mestra comum que une todas as propostas é a combinação de Nanotecnologia, Fotoprocesso e Terapia Celular para o tratamento de patologias do SNC. (AU)
