Resumo

O grande desafio desse projeto de pesquisa é estabelecer as bases para aplicar o conceito de biorrefinaria a uma estação de tratamento biológico de águas residuárias, com geração de biocombustíveis e de produtos de alto valor agregado. Tal concepção se baseia no emprego de reatores anaeróbios como unidades principais da estação, principalmente pelo fato desse processo ter como produtos finais uma grande variedade de ácidos orgânicos e solventes na fase líquida, além de hidrogênio e metano na fase gasosa. Nessa nova abordagem, águas residuárias predominantemente orgânicas são as matérias-primas do processo e a estação de tratamento, com seus equipamentos e reatores, constituem a rede de instalações para geração de produtos e subprodutos de alto valor agregado. Muitos desafios devem ser superados com essa nova concepção a começar pelas baixas concentrações de matéria orgânica encontradas em águas residuárias o que leva a geração de produtos também em baixas concentrações. A esse desafio se soma a complexidade da composição das águas residuárias, com variações temporais e espaciais. O uso de culturas microbianas mistas, embora seja uma grande vantagem para a biotecnologia anaeróbia, passa a ser um outro desafio para a concepção de biorrefinaria já que o controle do processo pode se tornar difícil. Para superar esses desafios, um grupo multidisciplinar de pesquisadores foi constituído com o objetivo de estabelecer os fundamentos de uma biorrefinaria alimentada com águas residuárias que gere energia e materiais de alto valor agregado além de cumprir com sua função principal de mitigação dos impactos ambientais de lançamento de despejos líquidos no ambiente.
