Resumo

The aim of the workshop is to reflect back on the considerable progress already made on the project and build towards the publication of a book based on the very rich analysis provided so far in our case studies. Project funding within GOLLS has, up until this point, been solely available for bringing Brazilian scholars to the ISS/EUR (CAPES) whereas ISS/EUR funds have given these scholars facilities as well as helped fund parts of fieldwork in Brazil. What seems very important and opportune now is to bring together this original work into a volume around (what is widely acknowledged as) a very innovative framework and group of studies. The project (a developed and experienced network of Brazilian Universities and NGOs and Dutch based development studies professionals from ISS/EUR) needs workshop/network facilitation funds to do this. We are hopeful that FAPESP can provide this.In more detail, sections of the workshop (see below) are structured to give 1) an overview of labour and ports themes in a chain context, 2) a view across the various sector studies (completed/near completion), 3) a discussion of some very exciting parallel developments (e.g. role of state; influence of commodity traders; TNC locational changes etc) and 4) to have independent comment on how these studies and fit and what they imply. (note: we believe that a second day of the workshop should be used for a visit to an important locational node for many of our studies, the most important Latin American Port - Santos). (AU)
