Resumo

ContextThe rates of urbanization in Brazil (85%) and Germany (74%) are - internationally compared - very high. This creates both great opportunities for economic development as well as significant challenges for social and ecological sustainability. Instigating the German-Brazilian urbanization partnership during the first intergovernmental consultations in August 2015 through a MoU between the Brazilian Ministry of Cities (MCidades) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), Brazil and Germany endorsed their willingness to contribute to sustainable urban development. In the framework of this partnership, the German Federal Foreign Office (AA) asked the German House for Research and Innovation - São Paulo (DWIH-SP) to organize and host a conference on urbanization. The conference will be held as the fifth annual "German-Brazilian Dialogue of Science, Research and Innovation" which DWIH-SP organizes this year together with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), Parlament School (Escola do Parlamento) of the City Chamber of São Paulo and German Ministry of Foreign Affairs (AA). The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the publishing house Springer Verlag, German and Brazilian Ministries are also partners. Moreover, the event should be supported by the German-Brazilian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK-SP), German-Brazilian Association of Engineers (VDI Brasil) and Goethe-Institute. The Dialogue should focus on both scientific research and outreach in society and the private sector. (AU)
