Resumo

The word "pesticide" covers any substance or mixture of substances used for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating pests, or intended for use as plant regulators, defoliants or dessicants. One of the most common types of pesticides being used are herbicides, a heterogeneous category of chemical products, designed to control weeds. These xenobiotics can be grouped according to the mechanism of action in plants. Trifluralin belongs to dinitroanilines chemical group and its mechanism of action is by inhibition of cell division by inhibiting microtubule formation. It is used, among other crops, in soybean plantations. Tebuthiuron belongs to substituted ureas chemical group and its mechanism of action is by inhibition of photosystem II of photosynthesis. It is widely used in sugar cane crops. Currently, herbicides play an important role in controlling weeds, however, most cost-benefit analyses do not consider the environmental, ecological, and public health costs associated with use of herbicides. Although some herbicides are described as selective in their mechanism of action, their range selectivity is limited in some animals tested. Thus, the study of these compounds is extremely important. In order to investigate the redox regulation of protein-mediated transcriptional activation of the NRF2 directed translocation and binding to the antioxidant response element, the techniques of western blots and real time PCR will be used. These techniques are well established in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Kendall B. Wallace and will be will be extremely important to add knowledge to studies with herbicides trifluralin and tebuthiuron. (AU)
