Luis Felipe Santos Mendes studied Biomolecular Physics in the Physics Department of the University of São Paulo and graduated in 2011. For his work with distance measurements using continuous-wave and pulsed electron magnetic resonance applied to proteins involved in calcium-response homeostasis, he was awarded and granted to spent three months in the Gunnar Jeschke lab at the ETH-Zurich. As a PhD student in the Faculty of Philosophy, Science and Letters of the University of São Paulo, he was inserted in a structural biology project involving a multitask, membrane-associated protein, called GRASP, which works as key factors in the Golgi biogenesis and Unconventional Secretory Pathways. During the PhD, he spent one year as a guest student in the "Biomembrane Structure Unit" of the University of Oxford-UK (supervision of Prof. Dr Anthony Watts) and one month in the Chemistry Department of NCSU (guidance of Prof. Dr Alex I. Smirnov). His thesis was selected by the Brazilian Physical Society as the best one in the Biological Physics field defended during the biennial 2017/2018. He currently works as a postdoctoral fellow at the Physics Department of the University of São Paulo. Understanding how is the intricated relationship between peripherical/integral membrane proteins with the biological membranes, and how they both work in a biophysical perspective, is still a major challenge, and one we address using a range of biophysical methods that include magnetic resonances, optical spectroscopies and biochemical/biophysical assays. Of particular interest are proteins involved in the early secretory pathway, some of which are soluble intrinsically disordered proteins and also integral membrane proteins (p24/TMED family) - linked to the Center for Research in Inflammatory Diseases. Inside this main project, we also started to seek an explanation for the presence of one Metazoa-specific protein paralogy (the peripheral Golgi membrane proteins GRASP55/GRASP65) by going back to the past using Protein Ancestor Sequence Reconstruction. He has experience in classical molecular biology techniques (cloning, subcloning, mutant construction, expression and purification of heterologous soluble/membrane proteins) and a variety of spectroscopic and calorimetric techniques, with special emphasis on Circular Dichroism (conventional and synchrotron-radiation), fluorescence (steady-state and lifetime techniques), Magnetic Resonances (electronic and nuclear) and Differential Scanning Fluorimetry and Calorimetry (DSF and DSC).
