Dr. José Geraldo Nery pursued his graduate studies under the esteemed mentorship of Professor Anthony K. Cheetham at the Materials Research Laboratory, University of California-Santa Barbara (MRL-UCSB), and Professor Yvonne Primerano Mascarenhas at the University of São Paulo-São Carlos (IQSC-USP). His research was grounded in inorganic and sol-gel chemistry, with a strong focus on synthesizing molecular sieves for diverse applications, including water softening, environmental remediation, heterogeneous catalysis, and detergent production. His work demanded proficiency in advanced inorganic chemistry, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), culminating in multiple publications in high-impact international journals.Upon completing his graduate studies, Dr. Nery undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) under the guidance of Professor Mark Davis. His research at Caltech centered on computer modeling, organic synthesis of structure-directing agents (SDAs), and the design of novel zeolites. Building on his expertise from MRL-UCSB and Caltech, Dr. Nery was invited to join the research group of Professor Michael Tsapatsis at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he specialized in the synthesis and fabrication of zeolite membranes for industrial gas separation. This work earned recognition with a prominent cover publication in Science.In 2001, Dr. Nery embarked on a new scientific endeavor at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, collaborating with Professor Meir Lahav, a globally recognized authority in chirality, solid-state chemistry, and functional crystals. At Weizmann, his research focused on the synthesis and chiral amplification of homochiral oligopeptides, drawing upon organic and solid-state chemistry, polymer chemistry, and advanced mass spectrometry techniques such as MALDI-TOF and MALDI-TOF/TOF. These studies were published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition and Chemistry: A European Journal.Dr. Nerys extensive experience at world-renowned institutions, coupled with mentorship from leading figures in the field, allowed him to cultivate a robust skill set that established him as a dynamic and influential member of the scientific community. In 2007, after gaining significant professional, cultural, and personal experiences abroad, he returned to Brazil to establish a research group in materials science and nanotechnology at São Paulo State University-UNESP. Now an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at UNESP, his research focuses on zeolite chemistry for applications in heterogeneous catalysis, environmental remediation, and biomaterials for biomedical purposes.Since his return to Brazil, Dr. Nery has been instrumental in fostering collaborations with private industry, driving technological innovations through applied scientific research. A key highlight of his career has been mentoring numerous former students who have become researchers in private companies or launched their own startups, leveraging the expertise they gained during their PhD training.Additionally, Dr. Nery is actively involved in two distinguished graduate programs at UNESP: Molecular Biophysics and Applied Microbiology. His research in these programs is focused on developing advanced microporous and mesoporous materials, enzyme immobilization on solid matrices, and the creation of innovative materials with hemostatic properties. These contributions further strengthen his impact in both academic and industrial sectors, particularly in materials science, catalysis, and biomedical applications.Dr. Nery also maintains robust international collaborations with leading researchers worldwide. He works closely with scientists at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin, the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, Liverpool John Moores University in the United Kingdom, and the University of Wisconsi (Fonte: Currículo Lattes)
