Possui os títulos de Bachelor of Science pela University of Canterbury, Nova Zelândia (1973) (graduação), Master of Science pela University of Canterbury, Nova Zelândia (1976) (mestrado) e doutorado em Oceanografia (Oceanografia Biológica) pela Universidade de São Paulo (1981). Obteve seu título de Livre-docente no Departamento de Biologia da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da Universidade de São Paulo em 1997 onde foi contratado em 1989. É Professor Titular do Departamento de Biologia da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo (2006) e Vice-diretor da FFCLRP/USP desde 2020. Tem experiência na área de Fisiologia Animal, com ênfase em Fisiologia Comparativa e Evolutiva, atuando principalmente em temas como osmorregulacao e a conquista de água doce pelos crustáceos; bioquímica e biologia molecular de transportadores iônicos; ultraestrutura de epitélios branquiais e de glândulas renais; análises comparativas filogenéticas de parâmetros fisiológicos em crustáceos; fisiologia e farmacologia da adaptação cromática em crustáceos; sinalização celular e transdução de sinal em células pigmentadas de crustáceos; ultraestrutura de células pigmentadas; citoesqueleto e motores moleculares em células pigmentadas de crustáceos.
