Possui graduação em Física - Harvard University (1983), mestrado em Física - Harvard University (1983) e doutorado em Física - University of California at Berkeley (1988). Atualmente é professor titular no Instituto de Física Teorica da Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, e é Diretor do ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research. Tem experiência na área de Física, com ênfase em Teoria de Supercordas, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: supercordas, supergravidade e supersimetria. Ganhou o Prêmio TWAS em Física de 2009. Fellow da Academia Mundial de Ciências (TWAS) e membro titular da Academia Brasileira de Ciências e da Academia de Ciências do Estado de Sao Paulo.
