Licenciou-se em Física pela Universidad de Buenos Aires (1976) o se doutorou em Física pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1984). Foi pesquisador visitante na AT&T Bell Laboratories (Holmdel, 1987-1989). Atualmente é professor titular da Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie e professor colaborador da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) e membro do comitê de Física da Fapesp. Foi diretor do Centro de Pesquisa em Óptica e Fotônica (CEPID CePOF-Unicamp), Instituto Nacional de Ciencia e Tecnologia Fotônica para Comunicações Ópticas (INCT Fotonicom) e Coordenador do Projeto KyaTera. Foi membro do comitê coordenador do programa TIDIA (Tecnologias da Informação no Desenvolvimento da Internet Avançada) da Fapesp. É membro da OSA Optical Society, IEEE Photonics Society e Sociedade Brasileira de Física. Atua nas áreas de óptica não linear em guias de onda e fibras ópticas, dispositivos paramétricos, moduladores ultracompactos a base de Grafeno, propriedades ópticas e mecanismos de relaxação ultrarrápidos em materiais 2D.
