Stefanie Gil Franco

Stefanie Gil Franco is currently a research fellow in the Postdoc-Fellowship Program in Integral Human Development, at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, with the project "Between difficult heritages and art studios: mapping discourses and practices on art and mental health in a transdisciplinary perspective". She had her academic education in social sciences and art history, concluding in 2019 her PhD at the Art History Institute of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with the thesis: "Os Imperativos da Arte: encontros com a loucura em Portugal do Século XX" [The Imperatives of Art: Meetings with Madness in 20th Century Portugal]. Holds a master in Social Anthropology from the Universidade de São Paulo (FFLCH-USP,2011) and a Bachelor in Social Sciences (FESPSP, 2009). Her interests focus around themes regarding the institutionalization of madness, difficult heritages, instable archives, the nosographic practices of psychiatry, as well as the promotion of madness as a discursive element in art. She worked as a guest professor at Art History Department (FCSH-NOVA), between 2019 and 2023 and as a researcher in Banco de Arte Contemporânea - Maria da Graça Carmona e Costa (EGEAC) for four years.
