Resumo

CuAlMn alloys are very interesting materials because they have several types of phase transformations, which depend on the Mn and Al concentrations and also on heat treatments. In this study, the effects of Mn additions on the thermal behavior of hypoeutectoid Cu81-xAl19Mnx alloys were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and magnetization measurements as a function of the applied field. The samples were analyzed after slow cooling at 1.0 K min(-1), and the results showed that the mixing enthalpy alters the melting range of the studied alloys. The cooling rate was not sufficient to completely decompose the beta phase in the Cu81Al19 alloy. The Mn concentration limit for the appearance of considerable magnetic effects in Cu81-xAl19Mnx alloys is around 4 at.%. The results indicated that the manganese is more effective in the decrease in reaction rates involving phases produced from the beta(A2) structure. (AU)
