Crop-livestock integration with nitrogen (N) fertilizer application result in increases in crop yield and soil conservation. The objective of this work was to evaluate plant physiology and grain yield of soybean crops grown in rotation with pasture systems with grass-legume intercrops or mineral N fertilizer application. The experiment was conducted in a Typic Hapludox (Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrofico argiluvico), evaluating two consecutive soybean crop seasons grown in rotation with the following pasture systems: Momba & ccedil;a grass ( Panicum maximum cv. Momba & ccedil;a) with application of N; Momba & ccedil;a grass without application of N; Momba & ccedil;a grass intercropped with the legume pigeonpea ( Cajanus cajan ); and Momba & ccedil;a grass intercropped with the legume java ( Macrotyloma axillare cv. Java). Trifoliate leaves were collected from soybean plants at vegetative (V5) and reproductive (R3) stages for physiological analyses, and soybean yield was evaluated at the end of each production cycle. Grass-legume intercropping pasture system, mainly the legume Java, and the system that received N fertilization improved in the soybean physiological response with increase of chlorophyll, amino acid contents, protein contents, total N and urease enzyme activity. The soybean crops were benefited by the preceding pasture systems with grass-legume intercrops, without affecting the biological N fixation. The N fertilizer application to the pasture affected the N biological fixation in soybean plants, with a decrease in formation of ureides in the plant nodules. (AU) | |
