Resumo

We report on the crystal structure, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and electrical resistivity of R3Co4Ge13 (R = Y, Gd-Lu) single crystals, grown by the self-flux method. X-ray powder diffraction data show that this series crystallizes in the cubic space group Pm3n with lattice parameters that follow the typical lanthanide contraction along the series. Magnetization measurements establish antiferromagnetic ground states for R = Gd-Ho with the Ne<acute accent>el temperatures ranging from TN = 8.14 K (Gd) to 2.3 K (Ho), whereas Er and Tm are paramagnetic above the lowest measured temperature of 2 K. The ordering temperatures scale with the de Gennes factor, indicating that the coupling between the local 4f moments is mediated by indirect RKKY interactions. These magnetic transitions are clearly marked by lambda-like features in specific heat. The Y, Lu, and Yb members do not feature any anomalies that may be associated with phase transitions, but low-energy Einstein vibration modes are present at low temperatures. The Y and Lu compounds are diamagnetic and the Yb compound shows valence fluctuation behavior. The electrical resistivities of the series show thermal activation behavior, except for R = Yb which is metallic. The combined collection of physical properties are discussed in terms of the structure type and the trends in the series. (AU)
