"Produced Water" (PW), an important wastewater streams generated in the oil industry, is made up of numerous priority contaminants, including naphthenic acids. The removal of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CHCA) as a model compound from naphthenic acid was investigated by a simultaneous process of adsorption and advanced oxidation by functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The CNT used for this treatment was synthesized by a green chemistry approach. A reduction in the size of the iron nanoparticles improved the performance of the catalyst material. Characterization analyzes demonstrated the stability of the material, and its reuse did not modify the crystalline structure, while a decrease in the amount of total iron in the post-process material was observed. The removal of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid was conducted in a batch test with 100 mg/L of initial concentration, 3 g/L of CNT, and 5 mM of PMS, achieving 90 % removal after 140 min. The pseudo first order and Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic models adequately represented the experimental data. The presence of Cl- ions delayed the reaction time and decreased the effectiveness of the CNT/PMS system. Quenching experiments suggested that SO4 center dot- is the dominant radical species in the oxidation process. Conditions of pH 3.0 and 35 degrees C promoted the greatest removal and degradation of CHCA (>90 %), respectively. The present research introduces a novel material that can activate PMS and remove naphthenic acids by adsorption. (AU) | |
