Resumo

The growing demand to reduce the environmental impact of industrial processes has brought attention to alternative raw materials from renewable sources and to the reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions. In adhesive systems, water-based formulation with more bio-based content is an important topic to be improved. This study developed natural rubber latex pressure-sensitive adhesives using three commercial resin dispersions: two chemically modified rosin resins from coniferous trees and one hydrocarbon resin from petroleum sources. The properties of raw materials were evaluated, and the adhesives' tack, peel strength, and shear strength were analyzed in their natural state and after one year of storage, then compared with a market tape, thus determining the best balance of properties. Thermal property analysis provided information on miscibility and application characteristics. Results showed favorable characteristics for the three formulations made with 50% w/w of resins compared with the market option, superior performance for the rosin-based formulas over hydrocarbon-based ones, and excellent miscibility of the components. Moreover, water-based formulations with rosin ester resins, especially those with Aquatac 1060, showed no significant performance loss after storage, suggesting advantages over the commercial tape and enabling a tape with adhesive that has higher bio-based content and lower VOC emissions.
