This study presents a comparative analysis of advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CHCA), a model compound of naphthenic acids (NA). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) functionalized with various metal nanoparticles were evaluated as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators. Among the tested materials, Fe2O4 nanoparticles demonstrated the highest catalytic performance. The activity of the CNT-Fe2O4-NPs catalyst was assessed in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor under varying CHCA concentrations (50, 100, and 150 mg/L), a constant PMS dose (5 mM), and a flow rate of 0.6 mL/min. Results indicated that the CNT-Fe2O4-NPs catalyst significantly improved CHCA degradation compared to non-functionalized CNTs, with the removal behavior best described by the model of Yan et al. A key finding of this study is that activation of PMS by the CNT-Fe2O4-NPs catalyst led to the formation of toxic by-products, as confirmed by GC-MS analysis and the phytotoxicity tests conducted with Lactuca sativa seeds, which exhibited 100 % root growth inhibition and no germination among all seeds tested. To overcome this issue, the study also explored the use of ozonation and microbubble-enhanced ozonation as an alternative degradation strategy. This approach increased mass transfer and improved CHCA degradation by up to 95 % in 60 min and when catalytic ozonation with CNT-Fe2O4-NPs was used, the CHCA degradation time was reduced to 30 min. These findings demonstrate that microbubbleenhanced ozonation offers a more efficient and potentially safer alternative than the catalytic system with PMS and functionalized CNTs. (AU) | |
