This paper presents a novel and simplified directional protection element developed for onshore wind farm collector systems. The proposed method stands out by overcoming key limitations found in existing directional protections, such as negative-sequence, zero-sequence, and torque-based approaches. Leveraging normalized current and voltage signals alongside a novel angular criterion, the proposed method achieves accurate fault direction identification across all assessed fault types and operating conditions. Its simplicity enables easy integration into existing protection setups without the need for additional hardware or complex calibrations. The method's superiority was validated through more than 24,000 simulated fault scenarios on a detailed real-world wind farm model, achieving 100% accuracy, and further corroborated using actual fault records from the same facility. This combination of extensive simulation, real-world testing, and with high potential for practical implementation positions the proposed scheme as a robust and effective solution to allow reduced fault-clearing times, thereby preserving the integrity of wind farm equipment and contributing to improved availability and safety of these systems.
