Resumo

Society is moving toward greener sources of energy to mitigate the consumption of fossil fuels, and such condition is putting the spotlight on a great variety of technologies. Talking specifically about hybridization and electrification in the maritime field, technologies such as batteries and fuel cells need to be highlighted. This work develops models for these two components and their respective thermal management system on a platform support vessel application. The models are based on an assembly of multiple validated models of the battery cell, fuel cell, their auxiliary components, and multiple control techniques. Based on that, a model for each component system is developed and capable of delivering the required power, tracking required references and maintaining the temperature of the components within an acceptable and safe range. All of that while being energetically efficient, that is, their thermal management systems do not require as much power as the amount of power they generate. Among the discoveries, it was found that: (i) For the batteries on maritime application, the liquid cooling strategies can be close to 70% more expensive when compared to an air cooling strategy; (ii) for the fuel cell cooling strategy, there is no debate, and the liquid cooling strategy is the best choice on maritime application; (iii) for the model predictive controller that focuses on efficiency, in the case of the batteries, the horizon prediction has a great effect on the equilibrium temperature causing variations of 1K.
