The use of microwave radiation (MW) in materials synthesis is gaining increasing attention due to its advantages in terms of processing speed, energy efficiency, and environmental impact. Compared to conventional (CM) thermal methods, microwave-assisted synthesis is generally faster, cleaner, and more economical. Although numerous studies have demonstrated the successful use of microwaves in synthesizing both organic and inorganic materials, their application in glass synthesis remains a relatively underexplored area. In this work, we present a novel, cost-effective method for synthesizing erbium-doped zinc phosphate glasses using microwave radiation. The study offers a comparative assessment of structural characterization, energy consumption, and optical amplification performance at the 1550 nm band between microwave-assisted and conventional resistive heating techniques. Structural analyses via X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy confirm that both synthesis routes produce amorphous glasses with similar vibrational profiles, indicating that the glass network remains unaffected by the heating method. In addition, SEM-EDS elemental mapping shows a homogeneous elemental distribution and uniform composition in both set of samples. Optical characterizations further demonstrated similar attenuation coefficients of 1.5 +/- 0.2 dB/mm (conventional) and 1.3 +/- 0.2 dB/mm (microwave) and equivalent differential gain behavior at 1550 nm. The net optical gain was achieved at similar pump powers (21 dBm) in both types of samples. Notably, the microwave-assisted process achieved these results while consuming approximately 94% less energy than the conventional approach, underscoring its significant potential for the sustainable and cost-effective production of photonic materials.
