This study explores the development of previously unreported cellulose/tannin-based carbon xerogels for use in gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs), introducing a renewable and highly tunable material platform for electrochemical applications. Unlike conventional carbon materials derived from fossil-based precursors, this novel xerogel combines two abundant, low-cost, and fully bio-based components-cellulose and tannin-to produce a porous carbon network with tailored surface chemistry and hierarchical porosity. Such a combination has not been described in the context of GDE fabrication, positioning this work at the forefront of sustainable electrode engineering. The results obtained show that the incorporation of a higher tannin content into the carbon xerogel matrix led to an enhanced selectivity toward H2O2 production, while thermal treatment at elevated temperatures led to a positive shift in the onset potential for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), indicating a reduction in the energy required for H2O2 generation. These improvements in the performance and efficiency of the proposed electrodes are attributed to morphological and chemical modifications induced by tannin incorporation, including the formation of particles with a well-developed porous architecture, increased specific surface area - particularly in the microporous range, and greater surface hydrophobicity. These features collectively improve oxygen diffusion and wettability, both of which are critical for efficient H2O2 electrogeneration. The GDE produced using the optimized carbon xerogel, prepared with a 50:50 tannin-to-cellulose ratio and calcined at 600 degrees C, yielded H2O2 concentrations of up to 650 mg L-1 after 1 hour of electrolysis at a current density of 100 mA cm-2, with a comparable performance to commercial carbonaceous materials applied in similar systems. Additionally, the GDE demonstrated good stability for application in multiple cycles, further highlighting its promising nature. (AU) | |
