This study investigates the effect of Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet (APPJ) as a preconditioning treatment to promote calcium phosphate (CaP) formation on dense Al2O3/ZrO2 nanocomposites, with the aim of enhancing their bioactivity for biomedical applications. The plasma activation is expected to modify surface properties and/ or the surrounding medium, facilitating nucleation and growth of bioactive CaP layers. Three plasma activation strategies were evaluated: direct plasma activation of the nanocomposite surface, plasma activation of the simulated body fluid (SBF) prior to immersion, and combined plasma activation of both the surface and the SBF. The nanocomposites were subsequently coated with CaP using the biomimetic method and characterized by Xray diffractometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. APPJ activation improved the surface properties of Al2O3/ZrO2, increasing their hydrophilicity and promoting CaP deposition during biomimetic coating. Characterization of the coated samples revealed that those subjected to direct surface plasma activation or combined surface/SBF plasma activation exhibited the highest CaP formation compared to the other conditions. The predominant CaP phases identified included HAp, alpha-TCP, beta-TCP, and TTCP, with HAp showing the highest peak areas, indicating enhanced CaP formation efficiency. APPJ activation proved effective for tailoring ceramic nanocomposite surfaces to optimize biomimetic coating performance. (AU) | |
