This paper discusses the potential of energy harvesting through piezoelectric materials in an orthotropically stiffened, flexible cylinder subjected to vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). Based on the unique high-speed response branch observed in previous studies of this structural configuration, the study presents findings from an experimental campaign conducted with a prototype energy harvester, highlighting its innovative features. Potential applications for the device are presented, such as in autonomous monitoring sensors in the offshore, hydrological and geophysical fields, where consistent energy supply is crucial. The capacity to harvest power in diverse flow conditions could reduce the dependency on batteries, lowering maintenance costs and improving the longevity of remote monitoring devices. (AU) | |
