Resumo

Background Emerging contaminants such as Bisphenol A (BPA), Ciprofloxacin (CIP), and Losartan (LS) are frequently found in urban and industrial effluents, raising concerns due to their persistence and potential risks to health and the environment. Conventional treatment methods often fail to remove these compounds effectively. Mesoporous silica materials, such as KIT-6, offer a promising alternative due to their high surface area, tunable pore structure, low toxicity, and low cost. Methods This study evaluated KIT-6 for the adsorption of BPA, CIP, and LS. Affinity tests were conducted to identify selectivity among contaminants, along with kinetic and equilibrium adsorption studies. Thermodynamic parameters were analyzed to assess the nature of the process. The adsorption mechanism was investigated based on surface interactions. Regeneration tests and application in real effluent were also performed. Significant Findings KIT-6 showed the best performance in BPA removal, reaching 92 % efficiency and 0.638 mmol g-1 capacity at 35 degrees C. Kinetics indicated rapid equilibrium and mixed physical-chemical adsorption. Si-OH groups played a key role in the mechanism. Thermodynamic data revealed an endothermic process best described by multilayer models. KIT-6 maintained stability over reuse cycles and achieved 90 % BPA removal in real effluent. (AU)
