Resumo

The constant growth in energy demand to meet society's needs is placing increasing strain on natural resources. To mitigate this issue, organic battery cathodes based on biomolecules derived from the metabolism of microorganisms might provide a sustainable alternative to inorganic compounds. In this work, four phenazine compounds (phenazine - PZ, phenazine-1-carboxylic acid - PCA, phenazin-1-ol - POH, and phenazine-1-carboxamide - PCN), with PCA being synthesized by recombinant Escherichia coli cell, were assessed as cathodes for aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIB). All cathodes exhibited stable specific capacity (>100 mA h g(-1)) during 1000 cycles at 1 A g(-1) without dissolution. As suggested by Density Function Theory (DFT) analysis, the lower specific capacity observed for PCA is attributed to the strong interaction of Zn2+ ions and the carboxylic group. Overall, DFT correctly predicted the influence of distinct ligands on the oxidation and reduction peaks of substituted phenazines. Ex situ Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) measurements yielded notable spectral features that may be associated with the formation of a solid film in the presence of Zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTf)(2)). The Zn2+/H+ ion pairing might occur simultaneously to counterbalance charge on phenazines. However, local alkalinization during discharge, revealed with POH as new in situ acid-base indicator, is detrimental for Zn2+ ions resulting in their precipitation, especially in the presence of Zn(OTf)(2). In contrast, when ZnSO4 was used as the electrolyte, precipitation induced by local alkalinization did not appear to affect the performance of phenazines. (AU)
