Resumo

Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE) enables rational structural design by explicitly accounting for seismic hazard uncertainty and balancing construction costs with expected consequences such as repair, replacement, injury, and death. Risk-based optimization can be naturally integrated into PBEE to pursue economically efficient designs, forming a framework referred to as Performance-Based Risk Optimization (PBRO). However, PBRO is computationally intensive due to its reliance on nonlinear time-history analysis (NLTHA) to propagate uncertainty and characterize the joint probability distribution of the Engineering Demand Parameters (EDPs). Since NLTHA typically uses a limited number of ground motions, the resulting parameters of the EDP distribution are subject to significant statistical uncertainty that can complicate PBRO by hindering convergence and introducing bias into the final results. To address this, a metamodeling approach based on noisy Kriging is proposed that incorporates statistical uncertainty directly into the optimization process. The methodology is demonstrated through a case study focused on the optimization of the buckling-restrained braces of a steel seismic force-resisting system. Results show that using only 50 ground motions per metamodel support point provides estimates of expected repair costs that deviate by less than 8% from those obtained with 5000 NLTHAs using the full finite element model. The approach therefore reduces the number of NLTHAs required by more than two orders of magnitude, enabling PBRO to be applied to real-world large-scale structural systems. (AU)
